AT&T Talks About DIRECTV NOW’s Early Issues

Latin woman looking disappointed at her laptopscreen, sitting behind her desk at the office.DIRECTV NOW launched back in November of 2016. It immediately was hit by glitches and unhappy customers. Slowly over the last few months AT&T the parent company behind DIRECTV NOW has slowly improved the service.

Now Tony Goncalves a executive at AT&T gives us a look at exactly what happened that caused the issues.

“What happened with DIRECTV NOW was pure volume, to be quite honest. It’s live television at scale and we had more customers in the early days than some of these services got in a year. Yes, we are seeing some material improvements in the stability of the platform.” said Tony Goncalves during a interview with The Information at Mobile World Congress.

There is a lot of truth that DIRECTV NOW had higher traffic than expected. In the first couple of months over 200,000 Americans subscribed to the new live TV streaming service. Yet it has now been 4 months since the service came out.

Mr Goncalves went on to talk about who is subscribing to DIRECTV NOW. “If we look at the data coming back on who’s subscribing, it’s not the low-value consumer or cost seeker—it’s the consumer who is tech-savvy, younger, lives more so in a multi-dwelling unit than a single-family home.”
