Update: AT&T just replied to our request for comment about DIRECTV NOW subscribers who lost their grandfathered pricing. AT&T says the emails that went out today notifying customers that they are losing their grandfathered “promotion” went out in error. AT&T did again refer to the grandfathered $25 discount as a “promotional rate.”

A few weeks ago AT&T announced plans to change DIRECTV NOW to AT&T TV NOW. Many had hoped that the only thing that would change would be the name, but now AT&T has started to contact some grandfathered subscribers to inform them that their grandfathered pricing on the Go Big plan is coming to an end.

Here is the email from AT&T about the promotional pricing ending:

Thanks for making DIRECTV NOW such a wildly popular live TV service with millions of views per month and the largest number of channels—all yours for the lowest price around!

We’re glad to have you onboard and hope you’re enjoying DIRECTV NOW across your favorite devices.

Just a heads up: your promotional period is ending soon and your next monthly payment for Go Big<and EXTRAS cDVR Included,3rd Stream> will be charged on Sep 07, 2019 for 80.00.

And if you’re enjoying your current channels, that’s music to our ears. But if you decide to switch it up, remember you can change it any time directly from your account.

As best we can tell it seems that everyone who is getting these emails also took advantage of the discounted offers to stay with DIRECTV NOW after the recent price hike. After the DIRECTV NOW price hike, AT&T offered $10 off for three or six months to make up for the price hike, and many took advantage of it. This may mean many have unknowingly given up their grandfathered status in exchange for a six month discount. September is six months after the April price hike exactly when six month discount was to come to an end. (Hopefully, this is just a glitch and AT&T will restore grandfathered DIRECTV NOW customers.)

This is terrible news for any grandfathered early DIRECTV NOW subscribers. Back when DIRECTV NOW launched you could get the Go Big package typically $60 for $35 a month. Many subscribers expected that pricing to last for life, but AT&T has been removing it from anyone who made a change to their plans over the last few years. Now it seems that taking advantage of an offer for $10 off for six months also counts as a change to your plan that will remove the DIRECTV NOW grandfathered plan.
