Fans of soccer watching matchSince live sports were put on hold due to coronavirus, many TV subscribers have been asking if there will be refunds for the sports content they’ve already paid for. AT&T has responded by giving credits to some DirecTV customers.

AT&T shared on its coronavirus response page that customers who subscribed to MLB Extra Innings and MLS Direct Kick will receive credits for the payments they’ve made to their subscriptions. Future charges are being postponed until there’s more information directly from the leagues.

“We are also extending our cancellation policy for both products so that customers have two weeks from when the season starts (or resumes) to decide whether they want to cancel their subscription,” AT&T shared in the statement. “We continue to monitor the situation closely and are in contact with programmers and sports leagues as they plan their next steps. Any rebates we receive from programmers and sports leagues will be provided to our customers.”

Customers weren’t alone in looking for those refunds. New Jersey Assemblyman Paul Moriarty, head of the state Legislature’s Consumer Affairs Committee said “The whole chain should just pause and think about all of the upheaval in the world and all of the financial worries that customers have. They should not be imposing these prices on people at a time when everyone else is being asked to forgo mortgage, rent, etc.”

Comcast was quick to pass the blame to the leagues, saying “Any rebates will be determined once the NBA, NHL, and MLB announce the course of action for their seasons, including the number of games that will be played, and of course we will pass those rebates or other adjustments along to our customers.”

Now that AT&T has set a precedent, we’ll wait to see if other providers follow in offering credits to customers who have paid for sports packages.
