Six Tucson television stations have launched NEXTGEN TV, a free digital broadcast technology powered by the ATSC 3.0 standard. NEXTGEN TV combines internet and digital applications to offer viewers enhanced news and entertainment choices, as well as interactive content.

Tucson viewers can now access these NEXTGEN TV channels over-the-air: NBCUniversal Local’s KHRR-TV / Telemundo 40 (channel 40.1), KVOA-TV / NBC (channel 4.1), KOLD-TV / CBS (channel 13.1), KUAT-TV / PBS (channel 6.1), KGUN-TV / ABC (channel 9.1), and KMSB-TV / FOX (channel 11.1). These stations provide information on accessing NEXTGEN TV, rescanning, and purchasing compatible TV sets.

“In addition to delivering enhanced audio and video, NEXTGEN TV enables personalized, customized, and interactive experiences to be integrated into over-the-air television for the first time, which NBC and Telemundo stations began launching across the nation last month,” said Clarence Hau, Senior Vice President, Standards, Policy & Emerging Technology for NBCUniversal. “These innovative features, which include the ability to restart a program when joined in progress, are now available on NBCUniversal Local’s Telemundo stations in Arizona.”

NEXTGEN TV offers enhanced viewing without competing for internet bandwidth. Features include personalized and interactive experiences, such as the ability to restart programs, consistent volume across channels, HDR video, and movie theater-quality sound with Dolby Audio.

Available on TV models from Hisense, Sony, LG, Samsung, and TCL starting at $479, NEXTGEN TV is “future-proof” and can be updated with technological advancements. Broadcasting in over 75 markets, NEXTGEN TV reaches 75% of U.S. households.

Key features of NEXTGEN TV include:

  • High Dynamic Range (HDR) video
  • Consistent volume across channels
  • Enhanced voice clarity
  • Movie theater-quality sound
  • On-demand internet content
  • Advanced emergency alerts
  • Hyperlocal news
  • Dual language capabilities

Current programming remains available to all viewers, with antenna users needing to rescan their TVs. Cable and satellite subscribers need not take any action.
