ATSC 3.0 has successfully launched in Cleveland, Ohio. With the addition of Cleveland, NextGen TV is now deployed across the top 25 U.S. designated market areas (DMAs).
The Cleveland launch was made possible due to Nexstar acquiring WBNX-TV and contributing the stations spectrum to technical and operational resources required to bring ATSC 3.0 to the market.
“Completing this ATSC 3.0 transition represents a significant milestone in the nationwide transformation of broadcast capabilities and is the first step to bringing a host of benefits to consumers in the Cleveland DMA,” said Brett Jenkins, Nexstar’s Chief Technology & Digital Officer. “NextGen TV service also opens up opportunities for EdgeBeam Wireless, our joint venture, to offer its services to customers looking to take advantage of the benefits of data delivery over a broadcast system for such applications as high-precision positioning, digital signage, and enhancing public safety.”
With ATSC 3.0, viewers will get superior picture quality, including 4K UHD and HDR capabilities, and immersive audio. The updated technology also provides advanced emergency alerting features.
In areas where ATSC 3.0 is available, viewers can access the broadcasts with a compatible TV or external receiver. Existing ATSC 1.0 services will still be available during the transition to NextGen TV.
