Today Disney’s new fantasy adventure Artemis Fowl is available for streaming on Disney+. The film, based on a set of 8 novels by author Eoin Colfer, was originally scheduled to premiere in theaters May 29 but opted for a home streaming release due to coronavirus shutdowns.

This spring has been a strange one for movie releases with all theaters shutting down during quarantine months. Now, The National Association of Theater Owners (NATO) has predicted that 90% of the country’s movie theaters will be open by July, just in time for the release of new movies like Disney’s live-action Mulan and Christopher Nolan’s Tenet. Which is perfect timing if this prediction rings true since WarnerBros says they won’t waste their time releasing Tenet unless at least 80% of theaters are open.

Disney must have decided there weren’t enough theaters reopened yet to warrant a box office release for Artemis Fowl. Even when theaters are back in full swing, it’s hard to say whether enough moviegoers will venture out to fill the seating and generate ticket sales.

Movies like Trolls World Tour and Sonic The Hedgehog have been killing it with at-home their at-home releases, making a great case for movies like Artemis Fowl to follow suit and not waste any time waiting for theater reopenings.

“Artemis Fowl is a true original. In challenging times, a twelve-year-old criminal mastermind is one heck of a traveling companion,” said director Kenneth Branagh. “Smart, funny, and cool as mustard, he’ll take you to new worlds, meet unforgettable characters, and mix magic with mayhem. His own family is everything to him, and (although he’d never admit it), he’d be as proud as I am that families around the world will now be able to enjoy his first amazing screen adventures together, on Disney +.”
