Apple has officially rebranded its streaming service, dropping the “Plus” from Apple TV+ to simply Apple TV, aligning the name with its connected smart TV device and app. The tech giant announced the change in a press release on Monday, highlighting the streaming debut of its upcoming film, F1: The Movie. The statement noted that the service now carries a vibrant new identity, though no further details were provided on the reasoning behind the decision. The move unifies the streaming platform, app, and hardware under a single name, a shift that could streamline branding but risks potential confusion among consumers.
Launched in November 2019, the streaming service entered a competitive landscape dominated by industry heavyweights like Netflix, Disney, Paramount, HBO, and Amazon. Apple TV, as it’s now called, debuted with a strong slate of original programming, including The Morning Show, which featured high-profile talent and set the tone for the platform’s focus on prestige content. Since its inception, the service has carved out a reputation for quality, amassing an impressive 553 award wins and 2,562 nominations. Notable achievements include multiple Emmy Awards for series like Ted Lasso, The Studio, and Severance, as well as an Oscar for Best Picture for the film Coda.
The rebranding marks the first name change for Apple’s streaming platform, unlike some competitors such as HBO Max and Paramount+, which have undergone multiple renamings in recent years. Apple’s decision to consolidate its branding under the Apple TV name may reflect a strategy to strengthen its ecosystem, where the app, device, and streaming service work seamlessly together. However, the unified naming could complicate differentiation between the hardware—a set-top box for smart TVs—and the content platform, especially for new users navigating Apple’s offerings.
Apple TV’s catalog has grown significantly since its launch, boasting a diverse lineup of originals that span genres and formats. Popular series include Pluribus, Slow Horses, Presumed Innocent, Shrinking, Dope Thief, Your Friends and Neighbors, The Buccaneers, Foundation, Invasion, Loot, The Last Frontier, Acapulco, Chief of War, Palm Royale, For All Mankind, Schmigadoon!, See, Dickinson, and Pachinko. The platform has also expanded into films and documentaries, with F1: The Movie poised to be a major addition. As Apple continues to invest in original content, the rebranding signals confidence in the platform’s identity as a premium destination for entertainment, even as it competes in an increasingly crowded market.
