Next month, Netflix is reportedly getting a big-time opponent for Jake Paul’s next match. According to Ring Magazine, former heavyweight world champion Anthony Joshua is finalizing a deal to replace Gervonta “Tank” Davis and face Jake Paul in Miami this December. The switch is expected to move Paul from an exhibition-rematch build to a high-profile professional heavyweight showdown.
Originally, Davis vs. Paul was scheduled on Friday, November 14, but was canceled shortly after it was reported that several allegations, including multiple alleged domestic violence-related counts, were filed against Davis. After the cancellation, the fight’s promoter, Most Valuable Promotions (MVP), stated its plan was to have Jake Paul headline an event on Netflix in 2025.
The Ring’s reporting indicates that terms for Joshua vs. Paul are being finalized as discussions continue. The situation is still fluid until the contracts are official for the high-profile matchup. Due to their name recognition, this event would be another attention grabber for Netflix.
Anthony Joshua, an Olympic gold medalist (London 2012) and a former unified heavyweight world champion, has shared the ring with many of the sport’s elite. Meanwhile, Jake Paul has become a massive draw by building his boxing resume, defeating a string of opponents from the crossover world and professional ranks. If the pair do come to blows in Miami next month, Joshua would be the biggest opponent of Paul’s career on paper.
This story is still developing, but if finalized, it could be a knockout victory for Netflix. Paul’s previous bouts on the streamer have attracted millions of viewers. His 2024 bout with Mike Tyson was the most-streamed sporting event ever, with 108 million live viewers. With that success, the industry is taking note as other streamers are making changes to their business model when it comes to boxing or adding the sport to their lineup.
