Couple looking over bills

As the new year approaches, Optimum cable subscribers are facing the possibility of starting 2025 without access to their beloved local sports teams. A carriage dispute between Optimum and MSG Networks, the home of the New York Knicks, Rangers, Islanders, Devils, and Buffalo Sabres, has reached a critical impasse, with both sides entrenched in their positions.

The current agreement between the two companies expires at midnight on January 1, 2024, and unless a resolution is reached, Optimum customers could lose access to MSG Networks’ programming as early as January 1. This potential blackout has left many sports fans anxious and frustrated, with the fate of their game-day viewing hanging in the balance.

“Exorbitant Fees” and Customer Choice at the Heart of the Dispute:

At the core of the dispute are MSG Networks’ demands for higher carriage fees, which Optimum argues are “exorbitant” and would inevitably lead to increased costs for customers. In a statement released to the press, an Optimum spokesperson outlined their concerns:

“MSG Networks is demanding exorbitant programming fees – which could raise our customers’ cable bills – and, to add insult to injury, MSG Networks is requiring us to make their channels available to the vast majority of Optimum video subscribers, which would force customers to pay for content they may not want to watch. We refuse to allow any entity to force our customers to pay more than they can afford.”

Optimum further contends that MSG Networks’ “all or nothing” approach is anti-consumer and outdated, especially given the availability of alternative viewing options like the direct-to-consumer MSG+ streaming service. They argue that customers should have the choice to pay for sports content they want without being forced to subsidize channels they don’t watch.

MSG Networks’ Position Remains Unclear:

MSG Networks has not publicly commented on the specifics of the dispute or their demands. However, industry analysts suggest that the network is seeking to maximize its revenue in a rapidly changing media landscape, where viewership is increasingly fragmented across various platforms.

Here is a full statement from Optimum:

MSG Networks is demanding exorbitant programming fees – which could raise our customers’ cable bills – and, to add insult to injury, MSG Networks is requiring us to make their channels available to the vast majority of Optimum video subscribers, which would force customers to pay for content they may not want to watch. We refuse to allow any entity to force our customers to pay more than they can afford. And with direct-to-consumer options like MSG+ available on the Gotham Sports app, customers who want to watch it have alternatives so that non-viewers don’t have to pay for content they don’t want.

Our mission is to give our customers the programming that they want for a price they can afford. That’s why Optimum is working day and night to reach a new agreement with MSG Networks to continue carrying their content on Optimum TV lineups that works for our customers and their budgets.

This “all or nothing” approach that MSG Networks has taken is anti-consumer, unsustainable, and aligns to a broken and outdated model that they are refusing to deviate from. Regional Sports Networks, such as MSG Networks, represent the most expensive content on television, and as viewership becomes increasingly fragmented across various services and platforms, programmers like MSG Networks are trying to squeeze customers for more money to watch their content.

At Optimum, we’re fans first: we love our local sports teams, and we’ll continue to fight on our customers’ behalf to keep costs down and bring them the programming that they want to watch, all at a fair price and value. We will always prioritize providing affordable, flexible options first and, in a world full of subscriptions, customers deserve to access the games they love without overpaying.

We urge MSG Networks to stop using scare tactics and instead engage in responsible, customer-friendly negotiations so that we can avoid any disruption in service.

Customers can call us at 888-347-4784, chat with us or visit www.optimum.com/MSG to learn more about the solutions and options we have for them to continue watching MSG Networks’ content in the event of a disruption.

The Clock is Ticking:

With the deadline fast approaching, both sides are under pressure to reach a resolution. Optimum has urged MSG Networks to abandon “scare tactics” and engage in constructive negotiations to avoid a service disruption.

As the negotiations continue, Optimum customers are left hoping that a deal can be reached before the ball drops on the new year, ensuring they don’t miss a minute of the action as their favorite teams take the field or the ice.
