After months of speculation Anderson Cooper is staying at CNN. The agreement, first reported by Variety on Monday, December 8, ensures that Cooper will remain the cornerstone of CNN’s primetime lineup despite persistent ratings challenges in the linear television space. Sources familiar with the negotiations described the deal as a significant commitment from both sides, reflecting CNN’s determination to keep one of its most recognizable and trusted personalities as the network pivots toward expanded digital and streaming initiatives.
Cooper, who has anchored CNN’s 8 p.m. Eastern hour since 2013, has evolved into the public face of the Warner Bros. Discovery-owned outlet over the past decade. His steady presence during major breaking-news events, natural disaster coverage, and political upheavals in American politics has made him one of the few remaining appointment-viewing draws in cable news. Under the new contract, he will continue to lead CNN’s political coverage through the 2026 midterm elections, host the network’s long-running New Year’s Eve broadcast alongside Andy Cohen, and develop additional programming, including new seasons of the Sunday-night documentary series The Whole Story and his personal podcast All There Is.
The timing of the renewal carries particular weight for CNN, which has grappled with declining primetime viewership throughout 2025. While the network has seen growth in digital consumption and streaming platforms, traditional cable ratings have continued a pronounced slide, prompting leadership to secure its most bankable on-air talent during a period of strategic transition.
Speculation about Cooper’s next move intensified earlier this year when he switched talent representation from United Talent Agency to Creative Artists Agency, a shift that often signals an interest in broader entertainment and media opportunities. His occasional guest-hosting stints on Live With Kelly and Mark and Jeopardy! further fueled rumors that he might be exploring options beyond daily newscasting. At the same time, his continuing role as a correspondent for CBS’s venerable 60 Minutes kept him in the orbit of Paramount Global’s news division.
In October, reports surfaced that CBS News leadership had discussed Cooper as a potential successor to anchor the flagship CBS Evening News broadcast following the planned departures of current co-anchors John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois. Other journalists mentioned in that context included Norah O’Donnell, Tony Dokoupil, Matt Gutman, and Bret Baier who has a contract through 2028. The interest from CBS underscored Cooper’s rare status as a journalist respected across competing news organizations.
Despite those overtures, the new CNN contract appears to have resolved the immediate questions about his future. The agreement comes just weeks before Cooper and Cohen are set to co-host their annual New Year’s Eve celebration from Times Square. CNN began promoting the December 31 special over the weekend with a lighthearted Instagram video featuring Muppet-style puppets of the two hosts. In the clip, Cohen interacts with the felt versions of themselves, joking that the puppets can serve as bathroom-break stand-ins during the live broadcast and teasing Cooper about their respective Emmy awards.
With the contract now in place, Cooper is positioned to remain a central figure at CNN as the network navigates the rapidly changing media landscape heading into the second half of the decade.
