Amazon Video Rents More Movies Than iTunes, Google Play, & Vudu Combined

the-hangoverAmazon has long been a leader in digital movie rentals and now they are not only dominating the market for digital movies but they are also dominating all movie rental services—even Redbox.

According to a recent Digitalsmiths study, this Tivo-owned research company’s second quarter 2016 survey showed Amazon Video is now the number 1 place people rent movies in the United States. Not only are they the number 1 movie rental service in America, but they also rent more movies than iTunes, Google Play, and Vudu combined.

Here are the top rental services:

Although the study shows Amazon growing from 15.6% in 2015 to 16.3% in 2016, overall fewer people are renting movies. Both iTunes and Redbox saw a drop in rentals, and the number of people who do not rent movies grew from 61.7% in 2015 to 63.6% in 2016.

According to the survey 46.9% of people who rent movies on average spend between $1 and $8 a month on movie rentals.

Even though Amazon Video has seen growth there seems to be a steady but slow move from renting to subscribing to services such as Netflix that offer a range of movies for one monthly payment as movie rental services saw a -1.9% drop over the same time in 2015.
