Amazon Video is Now the Third-Largest Streaming Service in the US

1401x788-mozart-in-the-jungleAmazon is one of the most dominant websites in the world, and now it looks like their streaming service is starting to see the growth they have been looking for.

According to Sandvine, a broadband service company that monitors Internet usage numbers, Amazon has doubled in size in just one year. Amazon Video now accounts for 4.3% of all downstream Internet traffic during peak evening viewing hours in the United States.

That is well ahead of both iTunes 2.91% and Hulu 2.68% in streaming traffic but still far behind Netflix, which accounts for 35.2% of North American traffic, and YouTube, which accounts for 17.5% of American downstream Internet traffic.

This really should not be a surprise to anyone because it was recently reported that Amazon Video now rents more movies than Redbox and iTunes. Amazon also is the second largest subscription service—far ahead of third place Hulu.

Some other interesting facts found in this report are that streaming audio and video now account for 71% of evening traffic in North America. Cloud storage, such as Google Drive and iCloud, now accounts for more traffic than file sharing.

If this report shows anything it shows that Amazon Video has proven that people are willing to pay a little extra for the convenience of streaming a show now rather than going to a Redbox to rent it for a little less.
