The deadline for submitting claims in connection with a major settlement involving Amazon and its Prime subscription service is fast approaching, leaving eligible consumers with only a short time to act if they wish to receive compensation. In September of the previous year, the Federal Trade Commission secured a historic agreement with Amazon valued at 2.5 billion dollars. This second group includes consumers who signed up for Prime during the period spanning from June 23, 2019, to June 23, 2025, via what has been referred to as challenged enrollment methods involving vague or confusing language. To be eligible, these subscribers must have utilized no more than ten Prime benefits within any single twelve-month span. Those who qualify under these parameters could receive payments of up to 51 dollars.
The claims filing window opened on January 5 this year. Notifications containing claim identification numbers and personal identification numbers were sent to many eligible individuals by January 28. For those who did not receive a notification or who may have overlooked it, it remains possible to file a claim directly through the settlement website without a pre-assigned identifier. The final date for all claim submissions is July 27. After a claim is submitted, Amazon has 30 days to conduct its review. Payments for approved claims are expected to be completed by September of this year.
Additional provisions in the settlement allow for further automatic payments if the total amount distributed through the first automatic round and the initial claims does not reach one billion dollars. In such a scenario, automatic disbursements would continue by including individuals who used four Prime benefits in a year, followed by those who used five, and so on, progressively until the consumer fund is fully utilized.
The background to this settlement lies in a lawsuit brought by the Federal Trade Commission against Amazon in 2023. The regulatory agency alleged that the company had knowingly led millions of American consumers to enroll in Prime subscriptions through deceptive means. Rather than going through a full trial process that had been scheduled, Amazon agreed to the settlement terms to resolve the matter.
During the course of the investigation, internal company documents came to light that suggested awareness at higher levels within Amazon regarding the problematic aspects of the enrollment and cancellation procedures for subscriptions. As part of the overall resolution, charges were filed against two executives from the company.

Prime membership typically provides benefits such as faster delivery on purchases, streaming entertainment options, and other exclusive features. The administration of the settlement involves dedicated websites where individuals can access claim forms and submit supporting details about their subscription history. Checking personal email accounts associated with Amazon for any communications from the settlement administrators is also recommended as a first step.
