Amazon achieved a major milestone in e-commerce delivery during 2025, with over 13 billion items arriving the same or next day to Prime members worldwide. This marked the third consecutive year of record-breaking speeds for the service. In the United States alone, Prime members received more than 8 billion items on this accelerated timeline, reflecting a more than 30 percent increase from the previous year.
Groceries and everyday essentials accounted for half of all same-day or next-day deliveries to U.S. Prime members. This shift highlighted the growing role of fast delivery in meeting routine household needs rather than just occasional purchases. The convenience extended to a wide range of products, from fresh perishables to household staples, all supported by Amazon’s guarantees for quality and freshness.
Prime members benefited significantly from these advancements. In the U.S., the average member saved around $550 on fast, free delivery throughout the year, an amount nearly four times the annual membership fee. Globally, the total value of these savings reached $105 billion. Beyond monetary benefits, the service reduced the need for physical store visits. U.S. Prime members avoided an average of 64 trips to stores in 2025, saving more than 55 hours that would otherwise have been spent shopping in person.
The program originated in 2005 with free two-day delivery on about 1 million items, mostly media like DVDs, CDs, and books. Today, Prime provides free delivery on over 300 million items spanning 35 categories, with tens of millions eligible for same-day or next-day arrival. The expansion in both selection and speed has transformed how members shop, turning the service into a reliable option for staples, repeat purchases, and specialty items.
Several innovations drove these improvements. Amazon expanded same-day and next-day delivery to over 4,000 smaller cities, towns, and rural areas across 44 states at no extra cost to members. This came through a $4 billion investment in the rural delivery network, converting existing stations into hybrid hubs. Everyday essentials such as coffee, paper towels, and batteries became available quickly in regions previously underserved. In these areas, such items dominated repeat purchases, with rural same-day customer numbers nearly doubling year-over-year.
The company also boosted perishable grocery options by integrating thousands of fresh items into its same-day network. This allowed seamless shopping for groceries alongside electronics, toys, and apparel in thousands of U.S. cities and towns, without separate checkouts or minimums. As a result, a record 4 billion grocery and essential items reached U.S. Prime members same-day or next-day.
Prescription delivery through Amazon Pharmacy expanded with same-day options using the existing network, reaching remote locations faster while maintaining 24/7 pharmacist access and transparent pricing.
Internationally, ultra-fast delivery grew through Amazon Now in markets like India, Mexico, and the UAE, delivering essentials and groceries in under 30 minutes with Prime discounts. Testing began in the U.S. and U.K. to bring similar capabilities.
Advanced AI models played a key role by predicting demand and optimizing inventory placement across fulfillment centers. This reduced shipping distances, sped up deliveries, and adapted selection to local and seasonal preferences while preserving broad availability.
Same-day delivery became widely accessible in the U.S., covering the vast majority of the population with millions of items eligible for arrival within hours. The network’s growth produced a 70 percent increase in items delivered in less than a day compared to the prior year. In most areas, Prime members qualify for free same-day delivery on orders of $25 or more.
These enhancements stem from strategic product placement closer to customers, allowing faster service without changing core fulfillment tasks. Amazon maintains its focus on workplace safety alongside speed improvements.
Prime continues to evolve as a comprehensive benefit, combining unmatched convenience, vast selection, and substantial savings for members globally.
