Amazon has announced a significant update to its Prime Video ad-free subscription service, rebranding and enhancing it as Prime Video Ultra starting April 10, 2026. The change affects existing subscribers to the current Prime Video Ad Free option, transitioning them automatically to the new tier with a price adjustment and added premium features.

The current ad-free subscription, which allows viewers to enjoy Prime Video content without commercial interruptions, will evolve into Prime Video Ultra. This new plan will cost $4.99 per month in the United States. For those on an annual Prime plan, Amazon is offering the option to switch to an annual Ultra subscription at $45.99 per year, representing a 23% savings compared to paying monthly.

Prime Video Ultra builds on the foundation of ad-free viewing by incorporating several upgraded capabilities designed to improve the overall streaming experience. Subscribers will continue to access content without ads for movies and TV shows available through Prime Video. The tier emphasizes higher-quality visuals with support for 4K UHD resolution, delivering sharper and more detailed imagery that is four times the resolution of standard HD.

Audio enhancements include Dolby Atmos, providing immersive spatial sound that envelops viewers for a more cinematic feel, particularly beneficial on compatible home theater systems or soundbars. Offline viewing options expand significantly, increasing the limit to 100 downloads for licensed content, a substantial jump from the previous allowance of 25. This allows for greater flexibility in watching shows and films without an internet connection, ideal for travel or areas with limited connectivity.

Additionally, the number of concurrent streams rises to five devices simultaneously, up from three, making the service more suitable for households with multiple users or larger families who stream on different screens at the same time.

The update comes as Amazon continues to refine its streaming offerings amid growing competition in the industry. Prime Video has evolved since introducing ads to its standard tier in early 2024, where subscribers could pay an extra fee (previously around $2.99/month) to remove them. This rebranding appears to position Ultra as a more premium, feature-rich alternative rather than just an ad-removal add-on.

Existing Ad Free subscribers will see their plans automatically renew at the new $4.99 monthly rate beginning April 19, 2026, unless they choose to cancel. Amazon emphasizes that no immediate action is required to maintain access, though cancellation remains available at any time through account settings.

The move reflects broader trends in streaming, where services increasingly differentiate tiers to balance revenue from advertising and premium subscriptions. While the ad-supported version of Prime Video remains available (often bundled with full Amazon Prime membership at $14.99/month or standalone), Ultra targets users seeking the highest quality experience without interruptions.

Prime Video continues to offer a vast library of original series, movies, live sports events, and licensed content. With this enhancement, Amazon aims to provide greater value for those prioritizing premium audio-visual quality, expanded household usage, and offline capabilities. The change underscores the company’s ongoing investment in elevating its entertainment platform to compete with rivals offering similar high-end features.

As the streaming landscape grows more crowded, updates like this help Amazon retain and attract discerning viewers willing to invest in an improved home entertainment setup. Subscribers affected by the transition have time to review their options before the April implementation date.
