Amazon is finally moving forward with its plan to switch to the company’s own OS, Vega, rather than Android.
Lowpass via The Verge reported that Vega OS will launch on Amazon hardware before the end of the year. Though the company hasn’t made an official announcement, the launch was accidentally confirmed through a job listing caught by Lowpass.
A listing for a Software Development Manager for Prime Video said “The Prime Video Fire TV organization is seeking an engineering leader that will help in building a Vega OS product that will delight customers worldwide” and “With the app launching in 2025, you will get to shape the future of this product as well as the culture of the team.”
The wording of the listing was changed after Amazon was contacted for information.
Reports about Amazon working on moving away from Android have been popping up since 2023. Moving to its own operating system means Amazon will have full control over how its products work. The downside is that existing apps will need to be reconfigured to work with a new OS.
We could get an official announcement from Amazon as soon as next week when the company has an event planned to share information about new devices.
