Amazon Pharmacy is set to significantly expand its same-day prescription delivery service, reaching nearly 4,500 U.S. cities and towns by the end of 2026. This growth will add almost 2,000 new communities throughout the year, bringing faster medication access to a broader population. Among the new states included in this rollout are Idaho and Massachusetts, where residents will soon benefit from the option to receive prescriptions on the same day they are ordered.
The expansion comes at a time when many Americans face increasing difficulties obtaining medications. Widespread pharmacy closures, ongoing staffing shortages, and transportation barriers have created gaps in access, particularly in rural, suburban, and underserved urban areas. These challenges affect millions who depend on timely prescriptions for both acute and chronic conditions. By leveraging its extensive logistics network, Amazon Pharmacy aims to bridge these gaps, delivering medications directly to customers’ doors—often within hours—regardless of location.
The company has developed tailored delivery approaches to handle diverse environments. In dense urban centers, such as parts of Manhattan, medications arrive via e-bikes for quick navigation through traffic.
In suburban neighborhoods, electric vehicles ensure efficient service. For remote or unique locations, like Mackinac Island in Michigan, deliveries involve ferries combined with horse-drawn carriages to reach car-free areas.
In select One Medical clinics, particularly in cities like Los Angeles, patients can access prescriptions almost immediately through Amazon Pharmacy kiosks installed in clinic lobbies, enabling treatment to begin right after appointments. Plans are underway to increase the number of these kiosks in 2026.
Beyond major cities, the service extends to isolated regions. In remote Alaskan towns and communities across the Navajo Nation, such as Fort Defiance and Keams Canyon, where the nearest traditional pharmacy may require a 45- to 60-minute drive, Amazon Pharmacy provides next-day or two-to-three-day delivery options—far quicker than the five-to-10-day waits common with other mail-order services.
The same-day and accelerated delivery capabilities support patients with ongoing needs, reducing wait times from days to hours in many pharmacy deserts. Additional features include 24/7 access to licensed pharmacists, automatic refills, and PillPack from Amazon Pharmacy, which sorts medications into easy-to-open, dose- and time-specific packets delivered monthly. This system simplifies adherence for those managing multiple prescriptions, and a caregiver support tool introduced in 2025 helps families oversee medications for loved ones.
Cost savings remain a priority. Prime members without insurance can access discounts of up to 80% on generics and 40% on brand-name drugs through Prime Rx. The RxPass subscription, priced at $5 per month, covers more than 50 common medications for conditions like diabetes, hypertension, anxiety, and heart disease, with free fast delivery in eligible areas across 48 states.
Amazon Pharmacy also provides options like the oral Wegovy pill for weight management, with pricing as low as $25 monthly with insurance or starting at $149 for cash-pay customers. Collaborations with partners such as WeightWatchers for weight management support, Experity’s Urgent Care Network for rapid prescription connections, and DoseSpot for enhanced price and inventory transparency further broaden access and improve the overall experience for patients and providers.
This comprehensive push positions Amazon Pharmacy as a key player in modernizing pharmacy care, combining digital tools, innovative logistics, and strategic partnerships to make medications more accessible, affordable, and convenient nationwide.
