Today Amazon started to contact their Prime Direct Partners to let them know that effect July 31st, 2018 they are ending their free with ads Amazon video program.

The free with ads program let video creators add videos to Amazon Prime Video and make them free to non-prime members who are willing to watch them with ads. (The videos would also stream ad-free to Prime members.) Many YouTube creators and even some larger studios have used this program to move their videos over to Amazon Prime Video. Now though that is coming to an end later this month.

Here is the email Amazon just sent out to their partners:

Dear valued partner,
We’re writing to notify you of an upcoming update to the available offer types on Prime Video Direct (PVD). We are always listening to partner and customer feedback, and iterating on their behalf. Occasionally, that means changes to our service.
Effective July 31, 2018 ad-supported access or “Free with Ads” will no longer be a supported offer type for content distributed through Prime Video Direct in the US and existing ad-supported offers for your titles will be removed; this will not impact the availability of any other offer types. You may still publish your title into Prime Subscription Access (included with Prime), Digital Rental and Digital Purchase, making it available to over 100 million Prime members around the world. This change does not impact any royalties accrued through July 31, 2018 and payment schedules will remain unchanged.

Amazon has not commented on why they are ending the free with ads program. It is very possible Amazon sees this as a way to push more Prime subscriptions. It is also possible Amazon just decided the small number of people using fee with ads did not make it worth their time.
