In a significant restructuring move, Amazon has overhauled its audio divisions, resulting in the layoff of more than 100 employees and a dramatic reduction in the scope of its Wondery podcast studio. The strategic shift, first reported by Bloomberg, includes the departure of Wondery CEO Jen Sargent. Marshall Lewy, Wondery’s head of content, will transition to Audible, Amazon’s Newark, NJ-based subsidiary focused on audiobooks and podcasts.
As part of the reorganization, Wondery’s narrative podcasts will be folded into Audible, while personality-driven talk shows, such as New Heights hosted by Travis and Jason Kelce, will either move to Audible or be managed by a newly created “creator services” team. The Wondery brand will persist for select podcasts, including New Heights and Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert, but its overall footprint will be significantly reduced.
Amazon acquired Wondery in 2020, twelve years after purchasing Audible, as part of its push into the booming podcast industry. Wondery has made notable strides, securing high-profile talent like the Kelce brothers and LeBron James, and producing podcasts that inspired film and TV adaptations. However, the studio faces stiff competition from tech giants like Spotify and YouTube, both of which command substantial resources in the podcasting space.
The podcast advertising market is projected to generate $2.5 billion in revenue this year, with growth expected to surpass $3 billion by 2028, according to eMarketer. Amazon has increasingly highlighted audio advertising, encompassing podcasts and Amazon Music, in its annual upfront presentations to advertisers, emphasizing the role of its Alexa voice assistant in enhancing ad campaigns.
In a memo to employees, Steve Boom, Amazon’s VP of Audio, Twitch, and Games, explained the rationale behind the restructuring. “The podcast landscape has evolved significantly over the past few years,” Boom wrote. “As video podcasting has grown in popularity, we have learned that creator-led, video-integrated shows have different audience needs and require distinct discovery, growth, and monetization strategies compared to audio-first, narrative series.” He noted that the rise of video has blurred the definition of a podcast creator, prompting Amazon to adapt by leveraging synergies across its Audio, Twitch, and Games (ATG) businesses, including Audible, Amazon Music, and Talent Services.
Boom emphasized that the reorganization aims to streamline operations by separating Wondery’s narrative podcast efforts from its creator-led shows and integrating these divisions into other ATG businesses with shared capabilities. “This is the best and most efficient way to serve customers,” he stated.
The layoffs and restructuring reflect Amazon’s response to a rapidly changing audio landscape, where competition and evolving consumer preferences demand agility. While the Wondery brand will continue, its reduced role signals a strategic pivot as Amazon seeks to optimize its audio offerings across its vast ecosystem.
