Amazon has confirmed that a new Fire TV operating system based on Android 14 is in development, offering a reprieve for those concerned about the company’s potential shift away from Android. However, the company’s recent moves and the specific language used in its developer documentation suggest a more complex picture for the future of Fire TV and its underlying operating system.

Amazon’s Fire TV devices currently run Fire OS, a forked version of Android. The latest version, Fire OS 8, is based on Android 11. Rumors of Amazon developing its own operating system, Vega OS, surfaced in 2023, and Vega OS has since debuted on devices like the Echo Show 5 and Echo Spot. This led to speculation that Amazon might be phasing out Android in favor of its own platform.

However, the recent release of new developer documentation for an unreleased Fire TV OS based on Android 14 confirms that Android will remain a part of the Fire TV ecosystem, at least for some devices, according to documentation spotted by AFTVnews. This news will be welcomed by developers and users who rely on the compatibility and flexibility of Android.

Interestingly, Amazon’s documentation avoids using the term “Fire OS” when referring to this new Android 14-based system, instead calling it an “Android 14-based Fire TV.” This distinction, even when listing it alongside previous Fire OS versions, suggests a potential shift in branding and strategy.

One possibility is that Amazon may be reserving the “Fire OS” name for a future operating system derived from Vega OS, specifically for Fire TV devices. This could lead to a tiered Fire TV lineup, with lower-end devices running a Vega OS-based Fire OS with reduced functionality and app support, while higher-end models retain a full-fledged Android-based system. This strategy could allow Amazon to cater to different market segments and price points while optimizing resource allocation.

The upcoming Android 14-based Fire TV will also be the first in several years to utilize a 64-bit operating system. While all Fire TV models have 64-bit capable hardware, only the 2nd generation Fire TV from 2015 used a 64-bit OS. This shift to 64-bit will increase resource demands, potentially limiting its use to higher-end devices.

To ensure a smooth transition and minimize app compatibility issues, Amazon is providing select developers with access to a virtual farm of Android 14-based Fire TV devices for testing. This proactive approach should help mitigate the challenges often associated with major Fire OS updates.

The confirmation of an Android 14-based Fire TV offers some clarity amidst the uncertainty surrounding the future of Fire OS. While it seems likely that some Fire TV devices, particularly entry-level models, may transition to a Vega OS-based system with potentially reduced capabilities, the continued use of Android on higher-end models is reassuring for those who value the platform’s flexibility and app ecosystem.
