Adult Swim recently announced the network will be adding another hour to its nightly lineup this fall. The hour, titled “Checkered Past”, will be filled with Adult Swim classic cartoons that have high nostalgic value as well as a long-time unwavering fan base since their debuts.

Among the cartoons are Courage The Cowardly Dog, Ed, Edd n Eddy, Dexter’s Laboratory, and The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy.

“Animation can both speak to multiple age groups in the moment, and also find new audiences across decades,” said Michael Ouweleen, President of Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, Boomerang, and Discovery Kids. “The early Cartoon Network originals – like Dexter’s Laboratory or Courage the Cowardly Dog are examples of shows that do both.”

The new block is in addition to a previous additional hour granted to Adult Swim by its host channel, Cartoon Network. Sources state Adult Swim’s extension into Cartoon Network programming was an instant hit “among viewers 18 to 49 by 24 percent.” This extended block starts at 7:00 p.m. EST and was outperforming Cartoon Network’s programming by a significant margin, prompting the network to give more nightly airtime to Adult Swim.

Mondays and Tuesdays saw big jumps in viewership, reaching 66 percent and 87 percent respectively. The block has increased Adult Swim’s total nightly lineup, keeping audiences entertained enough to continue into later-hour programming. This move raised Cartoon Network’s primetime ranking up from 12th place to 6th place among ad-supported networks.

The Checkered Past lineup will begin August 28th and will air at 6:00 p.m. EST Monday through Friday. Saturdays will showcase reruns of current network originals, including My Adventures With Superman and Unicorn: Warriors Eternal, one of Adult Swim’s most popular new animated series. Sundays will continue to air family-oriented content running from 6:00 p.m. through 9:00 p.m. EST.
