Streaming giant Netflix moves to personalize the experience for everyone under one account
Netflix is making a notable change to how shared accounts work, announcing that each profile on an account will soon be able to have its own dedicated email address. The update, which the company began notifying subscribers about this week, represents one of the more significant quality-of-life improvements the platform has made to its multi-profile structure in recent memory.
For years, Netflix accounts have allowed multiple profiles under a single login — a setup designed to accommodate families and households with different viewing tastes. However, all of those profiles have traditionally been tied to one account owner’s email address, meaning sign-in credentials and account-level communications all funneled through a single person. The new feature changes that dynamic in a meaningful way.
Under the updated system, each profile within a household can be linked to its own unique email address. Once that connection is made, the person using that profile will be able to sign in independently, receiving their own sign-in verification codes directly rather than having to go through the primary account holder. This small but practical change eliminates what has often been an awkward dependency — particularly in households where the primary account holder is not always readily available to share login information.
Beyond the sign-in convenience, the new feature gives individual profile users the ability to manage their own viewing preferences. Settings such as subtitle language, audio preferences, and display options can be adjusted independently without affecting others on the same account. This matters especially in multilingual households or those with viewers who have specific accessibility needs.
Perhaps most notable from a user experience standpoint is the personalization element. Netflix’s recommendation engine, which drives a significant portion of what users watch, has always been profile-specific — but linking a dedicated email address further anchors each profile to an individual. The company says suggestions for what to watch next will continue to be based on each person’s individual viewing history, reinforcing the idea that even within a shared account, each viewer gets a tailored experience.
Netflix has made the feature accessible through the platform’s Profile Settings menu, and account holders can also initiate the process directly from a button included in the notification email being sent to subscribers.
The company did include an important privacy note alongside the announcement. When a household member adds their email address to a profile, they will retain ongoing access to that account and will be able to view personal information associated with their profile. Netflix pointed users to its Privacy Statement for a full explanation of how personal data is handled under the new arrangement.
The rollout comes as Netflix continues to navigate the aftermath of its crackdown on password sharing, a policy shift that drew considerable attention in 2023 and pushed many users to either formalize their household arrangements or sign up for their own accounts. This latest feature appears aimed at making legitimate household sharing smoother and more functional, potentially reducing friction for the subscribers who chose to stay together under one account rather than split into separate subscriptions.
Netflix encouraged subscribers with questions to visit its Help Center or reach out to customer support directly.
