NASCAR announced a revised schedule for May, beginning with its return to racing this Sunday at 3:30 p.m. ET. The 400-mile NASCAR Cup Series race is the first of seven races scheduled this month.
This marks the first return to live sports since COVID-19 shut down all scheduled live events. The NASCAR races will take place in empty raceways with no fans to adhere to social distancing orders. They’re also taking precautionary measures and following all specific guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, requiring health screenings and protective equipment for everyone entering the facility, as well as maintaining social distancing guidelines.
“NASCAR and its teams are eager and excited to return to racing, and have great respect for the responsibility that comes with a return to competition,” said Steve O’Donnell, NASCAR executive vice president and chief racing development officer. “NASCAR will return in an environment that will ensure the safety of our competitors, officials and all those in the local community. We thank local, state and federal officials and medical experts, as well as everyone in the industry, for the unprecedented support in our return to racing, and we look forward to joining our passionate fans in watching cars return to the track.”
