According to a report from the New York Post, the Yankees are becoming the first MLB team to pair up with a company to stream games live.
YES, the cable TV network for the Yankees will be streaming a limited amount of games on Amazon Prime Video. Sources for the NY Post say that games could begin airing in the 2020 season. The ultimate plan is to create an annual subscription for Yankees fans.
Last month, MLB team owners voted to approve the streaming on in-market games. “Prior to that vote, in-market streaming rights belonged to MLB, not the teams, and MLB sold those rights to individual regional sports networks, or RSNs, like Fox and YES for $2 million a year,” according to The Post.
While the vote will eventually change the way fans watch games live, changes could take some time. However, because the Yankees own 20% of YES, the team will likely have an easier time working out a deal with streaming partners. Cable companies offering YES could slow down the process by arguing that they have rights to the games.
Other MLB teams will likely be keeping an eye on how the Yankees work through the process of moving to streaming. With so many issues working on deals with RSNs and cable companies this year, streaming could be the next move for many teams looking for a better way to give fans access to their favorite teams.
