Every year we make some predictions on what we expect in the year to come. In 2018, we had five predictions, and today we grade these predictions and see how we did. So, hold on as we grade the 2018 cord cutting predictions we made in December 2017.

#1 Streaming Services Shutting Down

In 2017, we predicted several services would not make it through 2018. This one we hit right on the head. A few live TV services didn’t launch or shut down including Verizon’s and CenturyLink’s live TV streaming services.

Even a few on-demand services like Filmstruck didn’t make it through 2018. So, for this prediction, I say we accurately predicted what would happen in 2018.

#2 New Streaming Players

This one was a bit of a give me as every year we get new players, but we tried to predict some specific new devices. The main one being a new Fire TV Stick, and we did get a new one with the Fire TV Stick 4K; however, we predicted it wouldn’t include 4K and we failed there. So, this one was only half right.

#3 In 2018 It Will Be Harder to Spot Piracy

This one was 100% on target. In 2018, a growing number of piracy companies launched streaming services you had to pay for. These services looked extremely legal and legit but didn’t pay the content providers for what they offered. Look for this to continue to be true in 2019 as piracy groups try to cash in on the growth of streaming.

#4 Piracy Lawsuits

In 2018, we saw the first wave of piracy lawsuits targeting people who offered streaming services and Kodi add-ons that are not legal services. Look for this to be a growing trend in 2019 as content owners try to crack down on piracy. On this one, I would have to say we nailed the growth in lawsuits targeting the new wave of piracy services.

#5 Cord Cutting Growth

We predicted that cord cutting would become easier and that happened. Never before have we ever had so many options to watch a lot of legal content. Look for 2019 to continue to make cord cutting easier as sports groups work to offer streaming options.

So, how do you think we did? Also, make sure to check out our 2019 predictions as we got much more aggressive in our cord cutting predictions.
