If you were hoping to stream Project Hail Mary from your couch anytime soon, you’re going to have to wait a bit longer.

According to a report from Gizmodo, Amazon MGM has confirmed that the Ryan Gosling-led sci-fi film will not be heading to streaming in the near future. Instead, the studio is extending its theatrical run with a return to IMAX screens for a limited one-week engagement starting this weekend.

The film, directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, first premiered on March 20 and is still early in its theatrical window. The IMAX extension gives audiences another chance to see it on the big screen, but it also comes with a clear downside for home viewers. The exclusive theatrical window has been extended, pushing back its eventual debut on Prime Video.

Miller confirmed the delay directly, stating that the movie “won’t be on streaming any time soon” while emphasizing that it’s designed to be experienced in theaters with a full audience.

Based on the novel by Andy Weir, Project Hail Mary follows a lone astronaut who wakes up on a spacecraft with no memory of his mission, only to realize he may be humanity’s last hope to stop a catastrophic event threatening Earth. As his memories slowly return, the story blends science, survival, and unexpected connections in deep space.

The decision reflects a broader shift across the industry. Studios have increasingly been returning to longer theatrical exclusivity windows after years of shortened release timelines. For major releases, especially large-scale sci-fi films like Project Hail Mary, that means a longer wait before they arrive on streaming platforms.

While the film will eventually land on Prime Video, there’s no confirmed timeline, and for now, theaters remain the only place to watch it. Of course, there’s always the trailer below. That’s online. You just have to wait a little longer for the real thing.
