Warner Bros. Pictures is in early discussions to bring a live-action adaptation of the classic 1960s animated series “The Jetsons” to the big screen, with Jim Carrey in talks to lead the project and Colin Trevorrow in negotiations to direct, according to exclusive information obtained by TheWrap. While no deals have been finalized, the studio is moving forward with plans to reimagine the futuristic family comedy for a modern audience. Trevorrow is also in talks to co-write the script alongside Joe Epstein, marking a potential collaboration that could blend their distinct creative visions.

The original “The Jetsons,” created by Hanna-Barbera, debuted in 1962 and followed the daily lives of George and Jane Jetson, their children Judy and Elroy, their dog Astro, and their robot maid Rosie. The animated series, known for its whimsical take on a futuristic world filled with flying cars and automated gadgets, ran initially for one season before being revived in 1985 for an additional 51 episodes. Notably, it was the first program to air in color on ABC. The franchise later expanded with “The Jetsons: The Movie” in 1990 and made cameo appearances in projects like “Space Jam: A New Legacy.”
Jim Carrey, known for his high-energy performances and comedic versatility, is being eyed for a starring role, potentially as George Jetson or another key character in this retro-futuristic universe. Carrey’s recent work includes playing the villainous Dr. Robotnik in the “Sonic the Hedgehog” franchise, which has collectively grossed over $1 billion worldwide. The third installment, released in December 2024, added roughly $492 million to that total. Carrey’s extensive filmography, which includes blockbusters like “The Mask,” “Dumb and Dumber,” “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” and “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective,” has amassed over $6 billion at the global box office, cementing his status as one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars.
Colin Trevorrow, who revitalized the “Jurassic World” franchise with his 2015 directorial effort, is a leading candidate to helm this project. His most recent film, “Jurassic World: Dominion,” released in 2022, also crossed the $1 billion mark globally. Trevorrow first gained attention with his 2012 Sundance hit “Safety Not Guaranteed” and has since signed on to direct an untitled conspiracy thriller for Paramount Pictures. His experience balancing large-scale spectacle with character-driven storytelling makes him a strong fit for a live-action “Jetsons.”
Joe Epstein, in talks to co-write the screenplay, brings his own creative credentials to the table. Most recently, he served as showrunner, writer, and executive producer for the 2023 series “The Idol.” His involvement suggests the script could explore bold, contemporary themes while staying true to the lighthearted spirit of the original series. Both Trevorrow and Epstein, along with Carrey, are represented by WME, which could streamline negotiations as the project progresses.
While still in its infancy, the live-action “The Jetsons” represents an ambitious attempt to revive a beloved property with a high-profile team. Warner Bros. hopes to capitalize on the nostalgic appeal of the Hanna-Barbera classic while infusing it with modern flair, potentially creating a new franchise for a new generation. As discussions continue, anticipation is already building for how this futuristic family will translate to the big screen.
