Simpson’s Showrunner Wants Universal Theme Parks To Keep Rights to The Simpsons

The Simpsons, the beloved animated series that has entertained audiences for decades, holds a cherished place at Universal Studios’ theme parks in Hollywood and Orlando. Despite Disney’s 2019 acquisition of 20th Century Fox, which includes The Simpsons, speculation about the show’s themed attractions relocating to Disney parks like Disneyland has been firmly dismissed by Matt Selman, the series’ co-showrunner and a veteran of the show since 1997. Selman, who played a key role in developing The Simpsons Ride, argues that removing Springfield from Universal would be an unthinkable misstep, emphasizing the deep connection between the show and the parks according to Entertainment Weekly.

At both Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Studios Orlando, The Simpsons Ride remains a cornerstone attraction. This motion simulator, launched in 2008, immerses guests in a chaotic 3D adventure with the Simpson family at the fictional Krustyland theme park. In 2013, both parks expanded the experience by creating immersive Springfield areas surrounding the ride. These vibrant zones bring the show’s iconic town to life with themed dining options like Krusty Burger, Lard Lad Donuts, Cletus’ Chicken Shack, and Moe’s Tavern. The Orlando park goes a step further, offering an additional ride, Kang & Kodos’ Twirl ‘n’ Hurl, which adds to the Springfield experience with its quirky, alien-themed fun.

The Springfield areas are a testament to the show’s cultural impact, blending humor and nostalgia with meticulous attention to detail. The food courts, in particular, have become a highlight for visitors. Guests flock to savor Krusty Burgers, Cletus’ fried chicken, and the oversized pink-frosted donuts from Lard Lad, which have become a park staple. The level of authenticity in recreating Springfield’s quirky charm, from the signage to the menu items, has made these areas a fan favorite, drawing repeat visitors who relish the chance to step into the world of the Simpsons.

Selman argues that dismantling Springfield would be logistically and financially impractical for Universal. The idea of closing the area for an extended period to replace it with something new seems implausible, especially given the park’s recent investments in other major attractions like a Fast and Furious rollercoaster and Super Nintendo World. The Simpsons Ride, though built on 20-year-old technology, continues to attract crowds with its sharp humor and replayable in-line experience. The Springfield zones, with their immersive theming and popular dining options, remain a vibrant and profitable part of the parks.

One standout feature is the giant donut from Lard Lad, a massive, Instagram-worthy treat that has become a symbol of the Springfield experience. Its popularity and relatively affordable price point make it a significant draw, further cementing the area’s value to Universal. Selman also sees untapped potential for seasonal updates, particularly for Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights. He suggests transforming Springfield with a Treehouse of Horror theme, leveraging the show’s beloved Halloween episodes to create a spooky, fan-friendly overlay that could elevate the park’s seasonal offerings.

For Selman, the idea of Universal parting ways with Springfield is not only impractical but also a disservice to the show’s legacy and its fans. The Simpsons’ presence at Universal Studios is more than just a ride or a themed area—it’s a celebration of the show’s enduring humor and cultural significance, ensuring that Springfield remains a beloved destination for parkgoers for years to come.
