Comcast’s NBCUniversal Tells Employees to Get Back Into The Office or Lose Their Jobs

NBCUniversal has joined the growing list of major media companies mandating a return to in-person work, signaling a broader shift across corporate America. The company announced on Monday that, starting January 5, 2026, its hybrid employees will be required to work in the office at least four days a week, from Monday through Thursday, with the option to work remotely on Fridays. This policy aligns NBCUniversal with its parent company, Comcast, which implemented a similar four-day in-office requirement in September 2023.

The decision reflects a belief that in-person collaboration drives innovation, creativity, and stronger workplace relationships. NBCUniversal, which operates the NBC broadcast network, Universal Studios, and the Peacock streaming service, is preparing for a significant year in 2026, with major events like the Milan-Cortina Olympics, Super Bowl LX, the NBA All-Star Game, and the FIFA World Cup on Telemundo. The company is also gearing up for high-profile film releases, including Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey and Illumination’s Minions 3, alongside new and returning series such as The Real Housewives of Rhode Island and The Traitors. Additionally, NBCUniversal will celebrate the opening of its first Universal Kids Resort and the 100-year anniversary of NBC.

Employees unwilling to comply with the new policy can explore a voluntary exit assistance package, available to those at the vice president level or below, by discussing options with their HR managers according to a report by Business Insider. The company emphasized that flexibility remains a core value, with accommodations for life events through time off, adjusted hours, or additional remote work when needed. However, the transition to a four-day in-office schedule may pose challenges, with some employees expressing concerns about the availability of meeting room space if hybrid workers return en masse.

Not all NBCUniversal employees are subject to the mandate. Those transitioning to Versant, a new company being spun off by Comcast that includes most of NBCUniversal’s cable networks and other assets by the end of 2025, were excluded from the announcement. This carve-out has created some uncertainty among staff about how policies will differ in the new entity.

NBCUniversal’s move mirrors recent actions by other media companies, such as Paramount Skydance, which last week mandated a five-day in-office workweek for employees in New York and Los Angeles starting January 5. Paramount is also offering severance to those who opt not to comply. Beyond media, companies like JPMorgan, Starbucks, and Amazon have similarly tightened in-office requirements, reflecting a broader push to bring employees back to physical workplaces.

While some NBCUniversal employees acknowledge the benefits of in-person work, such as improved efficiency and smoother workflows, the shift to a more rigid office schedule marks a significant change for hybrid workers accustomed to greater flexibility. As the company prepares for its ambitious 2026 lineup, the focus on in-person collaboration underscores its strategy to foster innovation and unity during a pivotal year.
