Sling Freestream was introduced to complement the company’s paid subscription service, Sling TV. Initially unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show, Sling TV aimed to provide a virtual multichannel video programming distributor for cord-cutters, offering major cable channels and OTT-originated services. The free tier, rebranded as Sling Freestream in February 2023, was designed to deliver ad-supported content without requiring user registration, making it accessible on devices like LG, Samsung, and Vizio smart TVs, as well as Roku, Amazon Fire TV, and mobile platforms. By 2023, Freestream offered over 210 channels and 41,000 on-demand titles, with plans to expand to over 400 channels. Today, with over 650 channels, Sling Freestream remains a budget-friendly alternative to cable, appealing to viewers who value flexibility and variety.
