Disney+ has unveiled an exciting addition to its streaming platform: a 24/7 live channel dedicated to classic cartoons from the 1990s and 2000s, aptly named “Disney+ Throwbacks.” The new channel, which launched today, promises to deliver a nostalgic dose of beloved animated series, including fan favorites like Doug, DuckTales, Darkwing Duck, Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers, and TaleSpin, among others. This move taps into the growing demand for retro content, offering millennials and Gen Xers a chance to relive their childhood while introducing these timeless shows to a new generation.
The Disney+ Throwbacks channel will operate as a continuous live stream, accessible to all Disney+ subscribers at no additional cost. Unlike the platform’s on-demand library, the channel mimics the experience of traditional television, with a curated schedule of episodes airing around the clock. The lineup draws heavily from the iconic Disney Afternoon block, which originally aired in the early 1990s and became a cultural touchstone for kids at the time. Shows like DuckTales (1987-1990), which follows the adventures of Scrooge McDuck and his nephews, and Doug (1991-1994), the quirky coming-of-age series about Doug Funnie’s imaginative world, are expected to anchor the channel’s programming.
The channel will also feature other beloved series from the era, such as Gargoyles, Goof Troop, and Recess, alongside early 2000s hits like Kim Possible and Lilo & Stitch: The Series. Disney+ has promised periodic “special event” programming, including marathons and themed blocks, such as a “DuckTales Treasure Hunt Weekend” or a “Back-to-School with Recess” marathon. The channel will also include interstitials with retro Disney Channel bumpers and classic Disney Afternoon intros to enhance the nostalgic vibe.
The launch comes as streaming platforms increasingly compete to cater to nostalgia-driven audiences. Disney+ has seen success with its existing library of classic animated series, but the Throwbacks channel offers a unique, curated experience that doesn’t require viewers to choose what to watch.
Fans have already taken to social media to express their excitement, with posts on X praising the inclusion of shows like Doug and DuckTales. “I’m canceling all my plans to watch DuckTales all day,” one user posted. Another wrote, “Disney+ Throwbacks is about to make my inner 90s kid so happy!” The channel is expected to rotate its lineup periodically, with potential additions from other Disney properties like Aladdin: The Series and Pepper Ann.
Disney+ Throwbacks is now live on the platform, accessible via the “Live TV” section. With its focus on iconic cartoons that defined a generation, the channel is poised to become a go-to destination for nostalgic viewers and families alike.
