In a significant update to its streaming platform, Amazon has begun rolling out a redesigned Fire TV home screen layout to a broader user base, marking one of the most substantial changes to the interface in recent years. Initially spotted by AFTVnews in November now though this new home screen is hitting more Fire TV owners. Spotted in a Reddit post, the new layout repositions the Fire TV app list and reconfigures the navigation bar, aiming to enhance accessibility and streamline user interaction. While Amazon has a history of tweaking the Fire TV interface, this update stands out for its bold restructuring, prompting both excitement and curiosity among users.
The most noticeable change in the new layout is the relocation of the app list, which previously sat on the right side of the navigation bar. Now, the app row resides below the first row of suggested content on the home screen, spanning the full width of the display. This adjustment allows users to view their top ten apps at once, compared to only six in the traditional layout, improving visibility and access. Navigation to the app grid has also been optimized: the Apps icon, now just three taps to the right of the Home icon, is far more accessible than its former position, which required eight taps to reach. While apps are now positioned lower on the screen, the ease of access remains comparable, requiring only two taps down from the Home icon instead of two taps to the right.
The reshuffling of the navigation bar has left it noticeably sparse, with significant empty space to the right. Amazon has previously experimented with additional navigation bar items, such as a “Free” icon, and this extra space suggests potential for new icons to highlight different Fire TV features in the future. However, the shift comes with trade-offs. The App Peek feature, which displayed content previews when hovering over app icons, appears to have been discontinued. This change likely aims to reduce clutter, as App Peek previews could obstruct access to other home screen rows, but it may disappoint users who relied on it for quick content discovery.
As is typical with Amazon’s interface updates, the new layout is being tested on a subset of Fire TV devices, including Fire TV Sticks, Cubes, and Smart TVs, before a potential wider rollout. User feedback will play a critical role in determining whether this design becomes permanent. While the update offers improved app visibility and faster access to the app library, some users have expressed concerns about potential future changes, such as moving the ad row—currently below the app row—above it, which could force users to scroll past sponsored content to reach their apps.
Amazon’s latest Fire TV update reflects its ongoing commitment to refining the user experience, balancing functionality with a cleaner, more open interface. As the rollout expands, the company will likely monitor reactions closely to ensure the changes resonate with its diverse user base. For now, Fire TV owners can expect a fresh, albeit jarring, navigation experience that promises greater flexibility and accessibility.
