About Max
Max is a premium streaming service from Warner Bros. Discovery that combines award-winning scripted series, blockbuster films, documentaries, reality shows, and children’s content into one platform. Originally launched as HBO Max on May 27, 2020, the service was created to house HBO’s acclaimed programming alongside a broader catalog drawn from WarnerMedia’s expansive content library—including Warner Bros., DC, CNN, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, and more. In 2023, the platform was rebranded to Max following the WarnerMedia and Discovery, Inc. merger, incorporating Discovery’s popular nonfiction and lifestyle programming into a single destination.

As a subscription streaming service, Max has built its reputation on a foundation of high-quality content, offering both HBO’s legendary original series (Succession, Game of Thrones, The White Lotus) and new titles under the Max Originals banner (The Flight Attendant, Peacemaker, Love & Death). The service also provides exclusive streaming access to Warner Bros. theatrical films and supports a wide range of content genres, from adult animation and true crime to children’s programming and sports including live-streamed events such as AEW wrestling.

Despite an ambitious start, the Max rebrand in 2023 faced significant challenges. Executives hoped the name change would signal a broader, more inclusive service that could better compete with Netflix and Disney+. However, the shift away from the HBO name created confusion and arguably diminished the brand’s perceived value in the market. While Max continued to grow, Warner Bros. Discovery faced mounting debt, subscriber churn, and increased pressure from competitors.

In response, Warner Bros. Discovery announced in May 2025 that the service will be renamed back to HBO Max later this summer. The move marks a strategic reversal and a return to the company’s most recognizable brand. Executives acknowledged that dropping “HBO” in 2023 may have undermined the platform’s unique identity, especially as audiences continued to associate HBO with prestige and quality. By reinstating the HBO Max name, WBD aims to realign the service around its strongest asset – its content.
