Fans of Steven Universe have reason to celebrate as a sequel series centered on Lars Barriga is in development for Prime Video, per a report from Deadline. Creator and executive producer Rebecca Sugar announced the upcoming series, Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars, at Annecy, a Cartoon Network Studios and Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe session.

Ian Jones-Quartey, a longtime collaborator and producer on Steven Universe, is set to join Sugar in the upcoming spinoff that follows up on the original show. The upcoming series is currently in early-stage development and details such as a premiere date, episode count, and full cast confirmations remain undisclosed at this point.

The original series aired for five seasons and 160 episodes from 2013 to 2019, receiving high praise as one of the greatest animated series ever; winning a Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Award in 2018 (Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation), a GLAAD Media Award (Outstanding Kids & Family Program) and Peabody Award (Children’s & Youth Programming) in 2019, while being nominated for countless others during its run.

After its initial run, the franchise expanded with the TV film Steven Universe: The Movie and Steven Universe Future, a limited series that tied up loose ends. Now, with the upcoming spinoff, the series looks to shift its focus from Steven himself to one of the franchise’s most transformative secondary characters by continuing to expand the lore in fresh directions. From the nostalgia of past fans and a new generation of viewers can tune in and to see where Lars and the Off-Colors might travel next, and what challenges they’ll face.
