In a final blow to fans of free ad-supported streaming, Crackle, one of the pioneering platforms in the cord-cutting era, has officially ceased operations, with its website now completely offline. The shutdown follows the tumultuous collapse of its parent company, Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, which declared bankruptcy last week, marking the end of a 20-year journey for the once-beloved service.

Crackle, which first launched in 2004 as Grouper before being acquired by Sony Pictures Entertainment in 2006, was a trailblazer in the world of free, ad-supported streaming. Offering a library of movies and TV shows at no cost to viewers, it paved the way for modern platforms like Tubi and Pluto TV. In 2019, Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment acquired Crackle, aiming to bolster its portfolio alongside Redbox and Popcornflix. However, the company’s financial woes, culminating in a reported $636.6 million loss in 2023, led to its downfall.

The service’s decline began in July 2024, when Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, hoping to reorganize and relaunch its subsidiaries. These plans unraveled as the company shifted to Chapter 7 liquidation, signaling the end of its operations. Crackle’s streaming service stopped functioning shortly after, leaving users unable to access its content. In a surprising twist, the platform briefly roared back to life in late March 2025, streaming movies and TV shows ad-free, sparking speculation about a potential revival. However, this resurgence was short-lived, and by mid-April, the service went dark again.

Now, as of June 7, 2025, Crackle’s website, which had remained active throughout the bankruptcy proceedings, is no longer accessible. Visitors to the site are met with error messages or blank pages, confirming the service’s permanent demise. No official statement has been released by Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, but industry analysts point to the company’s insurmountable debt, including $4.8 million owed to Amazon for AWS hosting fees, as a key factor in the shutdown.

The loss of Crackle is a significant moment for the streaming industry, as it underscores the challenges faced by free ad-supported platforms in a market dominated by subscription-based giants like Netflix and Disney+. Fans of the service have taken to social media to express their disappointment, reminiscing about Crackle’s role in introducing them to free streaming.

As Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment’s assets, including Crackle’s trademarks and intellectual property, head to auction later this month, the future of the brand remains uncertain. For now, cord-cutters must look to other free streaming options, as Crackle’s legacy fades into the digital ether.
