AT&T Enhances Its Internet Service Efficiency to Offer a Better Experience to Its Customers

AT&T has announced that it has made significant strides in improving its internet services by adopting prplware’s Lightweight Container Manager (LCM), a move that has bolstered efficiency and scalability across its broadband network. The transition to LCM has enabled AT&T to reduce resource consumption on broadband equipment, allowing for more seamless operation of multiple applications simultaneously. This development marks a pivotal step in optimizing internet services for millions of customers.

The adoption of LCM, a carrier-class platform developed by prplware, has been implemented on over 12 million AT&T broadband gateways as of May 28, 2025. This platform significantly reduces the CPU and memory demands compared to earlier container-based solutions, enabling gateways to handle multiple applications without performance degradation. The shift to LCM addresses the limitations of previous systems, which consumed resources even when inactive, thus restricting the number of concurrent applications. By leveraging LCM, AT&T has enhanced the efficiency of its network, ensuring that customers experience reliable and robust internet services.

AT&T’s journey toward this upgrade began in 2019, when the company recognized the potential of ARM-based chipsets in home gateways. These chipsets offered a powerful platform for running applications directly on internet devices, improving customer experiences through secure and flexible solutions. Initially, AT&T deployed container-based security applications, which allowed customers to selectively install and manage applications with ease. This approach proved successful, with millions of active containers deployed, reflecting strong customer adoption.

However, as internet devices became more advanced, the resource-intensive nature of containers became a bottleneck. By 2022, AT&T identified the need for a more efficient system to support the growing demand for concurrent applications. The transition to prplware’s LCM has enabled AT&T to run multiple applications on existing devices without disruptions, marking a significant improvement in service delivery.

Looking ahead, AT&T plans to further enhance its offerings by introducing new applications in 2025, including both free and paid options. These applications aim to provide customers with greater flexibility to tailor their broadband services to their specific needs. Additionally, AT&T is working toward full compliance with prplware’s software on newer gateways, which is expected to further boost performance and provide developers with greater flexibility to create innovative applications.

The deployment of LCM also supports multi-carrier application deployment, allowing AT&T and other internet providers to offer a wider range of services. This carrier-class platform fosters collaboration between providers and developers, ultimately benefiting customers with more choices and enhanced functionality. As AT&T continues to refine its broadband services, the integration of prplware’s LCM positions the company to meet the evolving demands of its customer base while maintaining a focus on efficiency and scalability.
