A Character Who Defined a Generation
As Norm, George Wendt captured the hearts of millions with a simple premise — a guy who wanted to unwind at his favorite bar. Whether making dry observations or entering the room to cheers of “Norm!” from the entire cast, Wendt gave viewers a character that was instantly familiar, comforting, and real.
Cheers ran from 1982 to 1993 and won 28 Primetime Emmy Awards during its historic run. Alongside Ted Danson and Rhea Perlman, Wendt was one of only three cast members to appear in every single episode. Norm became more than a sitcom character. He became a pop culture touchstone.
Beyond the Barstool: Wendt’s Life and Career
George Wendt’s real-life story was just as colorful. Born and raised in Chicago, he got his comedic start at the legendary Second City and went on to star in numerous films, stage productions, and television appearances. His guest spots on The Simpsons, SNL, and Frasier cemented his legacy as a versatile actor who never strayed too far from his roots or from the role that made him famous.
His wife of 46 years, Bernadette Birkett, voiced the unseen character of Vera, Norm’s long-suffering wife, adding a real-life layer to the sitcom lore. Wendt is survived by his wife, children, stepchildren, and nephew Jason Sudeikis.
People Magazine reported a story that Sudekis had told about his uncle back in 2017, “We all went out to California to visit and George had just gotten a new car,” Jason explained as Wendt sat by his side. “It was a badass BMW with, like, manual drive, which I’d never seen before, you know, I was pretty young.”
“He took me and my dad for a ride,” Sudekis continued with his uncle laughing along. “My dad sat shotgun. I was in the back all by myself. This is not when you needed, you know, mandatory seatbelts….He had my dad holding onto [the car] like nothing you’ve ever seen and I’m just, like, sliding around the background just because the seats were brand new.”
Jason finished with, “I hold that memory very fondly” – a sentiment about Wendt that can be echoed by fans for the past five decades.
