In a groundbreaking move for sports broadcasting, the National Football League (NFL) announced today that YouTube will exclusively stream the Friday night Week 1 game of the 2025 NFL season, set to take place on September 5 at Corinthians Arena in São Paulo, Brazil. This historic event marks the first time an NFL game will be streamed live and free in its entirety on YouTube and YouTube TV, accessible to a worldwide audience. The Los Angeles Chargers have been named the designated team, with their opponent to be revealed tomorrow, May 14, during the full 2025 NFL Schedule release at 8 p.m. ET on NFL Network, NFL.com, the NFL app, and NFL+.
Hans Schroeder, NFL executive vice president of media distribution, hailed the partnership as a significant step in expanding the league’s global reach. “We are excited to expand our relationship with YouTube to bring this year’s Brazil game to a worldwide audience,” Schroeder said. “YouTube and YouTube TV have been incredible partners of the NFL for several years and boast an immense global reach, and we look forward to Week 1 in São Paulo.”
YouTube’s chief business officer, Mary Ellen Coe, emphasized the platform’s massive engagement with NFL content, noting that fans spent over 350 million hours watching official NFL content on YouTube last year. “Streaming the Friday night game to fans for free around the world will mark YouTube’s first time as a live NFL broadcaster—and we’ll do it in a way that only YouTube can, with an interactive viewing experience and creators right at the center of the experience,” Coe said. This interactive approach is expected to leverage YouTube’s unique ability to blend live sports with creator-driven content, offering fans a dynamic and engaging viewing experience.
The NFL’s return to São Paulo for its 2025 International Games follows a successful debut in Brazil, with the Corinthians Arena hosting the league’s first-ever game in South America. The Chargers, a team with a growing international fanbase, will headline the event, kicking off the NFL’s global slate in style.
In addition to the Week 1 game, YouTube and the NFL announced a multi-year partnership to produce the annual Super Bowl Flag Football game, featuring creators and musical artists, alongside international flag football events. Building on the success of Super Bowl LIX’s Flag Football Game, which garnered over six million live views on YouTube, this collaboration aims to further blend sports, entertainment, and digital culture.
The announcement underscores the NFL’s commitment to embracing digital platforms to reach new audiences, while YouTube solidifies its position as a powerhouse in live sports streaming. As the 2025 season approaches, fans worldwide are eagerly awaiting what promises to be a landmark moment in NFL broadcasting history.
