Mother (2017)

Darren Aronofsky’s Mother! is a surreal, psychological thriller centered on a woman (Jennifer Lawrence) whose quiet life with her poet husband (Javier Bardem) unravels when unexpected guests arrive at their home. As the story unfolds, reality bends, boundaries blur, and allegories come flying faster than you can say, “What did I just watch?”

The film polarized critics and audiences alike, with some calling it a masterpiece of a metaphor, others were simply confused. Over time, though, it’s gained recognition as a bold artistic statement on creation, fame, and environmentalism, not to mention its intense, claustrophobic atmosphere. Love it or hate it, Mother! is undeniably unforgettable.

Why Mom Will Love It: Because it’s finally her turn to yell at the screen when uninvited people won’t leave. Also, she can use this movie as Exhibit A in future arguments about why she deserves a peaceful house.

Mother (1996)

Same name, different vibe. Albert Brooks stars and directs in this charming comedy about a neurotic writer who moves back in with his mother (Debbie Reynolds) in an attempt to figure out why his relationships keep failing. What follows is a mix of dry wit, emotional unpacking, and plenty of fridge-based passive-aggression.

Reynolds earned a Golden Globe nomination for her performance, which marked a late-career highlight and reminded audiences of her impeccable comedic timing. The film’s exploration of generational differences and unresolved emotional baggage hit home for many, making it both hilarious and surprisingly poignant.

Why Mom Will Love It: She’ll be deeply validated by how much trouble adult children are. Plus, watching Debbie Reynolds roast her kid with a smile is a gift in itself.

Friday the 13th (1980)

You knew this one was coming. It’s the film that gives new meaning to Momma’s Boy. Before Jason Voorhees donned his iconic hockey mask, Friday the 13th kicked off one of horror’s longest-running franchises with a revenge tale that begins at Camp Crystal Lake. As camp counselors try to reopen the cursed site, they find themselves being picked off by a mysterious killer.

While often remembered for its slasher tropes, the movie’s big twist shows that a grieving mother, Mrs. Voorhees found a new outlet for her sadness. In turn, this made it a genre-defining entry. Betsy Palmer’s performance as a sweet old lady turned vengeful murderer gave horror its most unexpected matriarch. Before you scream “spoiler alert”, the film is officially 45 years old. You should have seen it a long time ago. It’s a classic.

Why Mom Will Love It: She told you not to go off into the woods alone. She told you to be careful. And now look what happened. Justice for Mrs. Voorhees, honestly.

Bad Moms (2016)

Finally, a film that celebrates those who are trying their best…or maybe just trying…ok, not trying. You get the idea.

When overworked mom Amy (Mila Kunis) decides she’s done with the pressure to be perfect, she teams up with two other misfit moms (Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn) to break every PTA rule in the book. Cue the booze, rebellion, and gloriously bad behavior.

Bad Moms struck a chord with audiences for its unapologetic humor and its candid portrayal of maternal burnout. It was a surprise hit, spawning a sequel and turning “doing your best” into an act of rebellion. Critics praised its cast and its willingness to show moms letting loose.

Why Mom Will Love It: Because sometimes she just wants to chug boxed wine in sweatpants and ignore bake sale emails. This movie says that’s not only OK. – it’s iconic.

Stepmom (1998)

In this emotional drama, a terminally ill mother (Susan Sarandon) must come to terms with her ex-husband’s new partner (Julia Roberts) becoming a mother figure to her children. As the women navigate jealousy, grief, and acceptance, they forge a bond that defies expectations.

Critics praised the film’s heartfelt performances and honest depiction of blended families. Sarandon and Roberts deliver powerful scenes that have made Stepmom a go-to movie for Mother’s Day sobfests. It remains a touchstone for families dealing with complicated realities.

Why Mom Will Love It: Because deep down, she knows she’s Susan Sarandon – dignified, fierce, and irreplaceable. But she’ll graciously allow Julia Roberts to help with snacks.

Serial Mom (1994)

Kathleen Turner plays the perfect suburban housewife with a homicidal twist. When people in her community cross the line of good manners (or cross her family), she starts doling out vigilante justice in the most absurdly brutal ways. Picture June Cleaver with an actual cleaver. That’s what this movie is and every minute is full of surprising moments.

Directed by cult favorite John Waters, Serial Mom mixes dark comedy with social satire, poking fun at everything from true crime obsession to 90s family values. Turner’s fearless performance and the movie’s unapologetic weirdness earned it a devoted following. With its depiction of family life crossed over into a murderous theme, the world hadn’t seen a movie like this in a while.

Why Mom Will Love It: For starters, she’s been marathon watching True Crime for years. Sure, she might say she’d never kill someone over a white-after-Labor-Day offense, but we all know she’s thought about it. This one’s for her inner enforcer.
