The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) today voted to adopt groundbreaking rules to enhance commercial access to the lower 37 GHz spectrum band (37-37.6 GHz), a move poised to accelerate innovation in wireless technologies. The new framework is designed to support a wide range of applications, including Internet of Things (IoT) systems, wireless broadband, internet backhaul connections, and expanded capacity for mobile networks, fostering economic growth and technological advancement.

With these services offering 5G home internet, they will have more spectrum to improve service for high-speed wireless internet to customers.

The lower 37 GHz band, a 600-megahertz swath of high-frequency spectrum, has long been shared by government and commercial entities. However, the absence of clear sharing protocols has hindered companies from deploying new services. The FCC’s new rules aim to resolve this bottleneck by establishing a structured licensing framework that promotes efficient spectrum use while protecting critical government operations, particularly military activities in the 37-37.2 GHz segment.

Under the new framework, users must obtain a nationwide, non-exclusive license, coordinate individual sites, and register those sites with the FCC. Licensees are required to commence operations within one year of site registration, ensuring the spectrum is actively utilized. The rules also prioritize military uses in the lower portion of the band and establish coordination processes to prevent interference between government and commercial operations. This balanced approach is expected to unlock the band’s potential for cutting-edge applications while safeguarding national security interests.

The FCC’s action is part of a broader effort to make more spectrum available for commercial use, supporting the growing demand for wireless connectivity. As 5G networks expand and new technologies emerge, the lower 37 GHz band is expected to play a critical role in meeting the nation’s connectivity needs. The agency’s next steps include finalizing technical rules and engaging stakeholders to ensure the band’s full potential is realized.
