AT&T Inc. reported robust growth in its fiber broadband segment, adding 261,000 AT&T Fiber net subscribers in the first quarter of 2025, marking its 21st consecutive quarter with 200,000 or more net adds. This sustained momentum underscores AT&T’s dominance in the fiber market, particularly as competitors like Comcast and Charter Communications’ Spectrum brand face subscriber declines, signaling a shift in consumer preference toward high-speed fiber connectivity. This comes as Cord Cutting 2.0 grows with Americans ditching cable TV internet and switching to fiber or 5G home internet.
“Our business fundamentals remain strong, and we are uniquely positioned to win in this dynamic and competitive market,” said John Stankey, AT&T Chairman and CEO. “We are growing the right way as customers continue to choose AT&T Fiber and 5G wireless for connectivity they can rely on, guaranteed or we’ll make it right. The priorities we laid out at our 2024 Analyst & Investor Day have not changed, and we continue to operate our business to achieve the financial plan and capital returns we outlined in December.”
Meanwhile, Comcast and Charter’s Spectrum have struggled to retain internet subscribers. Comcast reported a loss of 87,000 internet customers in Q3 2024, following a 120,000-subscriber drop in Q2 2024, with analysts attributing the declines to the end of the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) and intensified competition from fiber and fixed wireless access (FWA) providers. Industry observers note that cable providers are grappling with market saturation and the superior performance of fiber, which offers symmetrical upload and download speeds critical for modern applications like remote work and streaming.
AT&T’s success is not limited to fiber. The company is also focusing on its AT&T Internet Air subscribers in Q1 2025, its 5G-based FWA product, further diversifying its broadband portfolio. This dual approach has enabled AT&T to capture market share in areas where fiber deployment is not yet feasible.
As cable giants like Comcast and Charter pivot to wireless services and network upgrades, AT&T’s fiber juggernaut continues to reshape the broadband landscape, positioning the company as the preferred choice for next-generation connectivity.
