Roku is making a bold play for soccer fans with the launch of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Zone, a new hub within its Roku Sports experience unveiled today. Just in time for the NWSL season opener this Friday, March 14, the zone marks Roku’s first dedicated space for a women’s professional league. It’s packed with live games, highlights, and more, spotlighting the premier women’s soccer league and its global stars—all accessible starting now on Roku devices.
Joe Franzetta, Roku’s Head of Sports, sees this as a slam dunk for women’s sports. “With women’s sports blowing up in popularity, we’re all about shining a light on the talent driving it,” he said. “The NWSL Zone is our latest move to celebrate female athletes, their jaw-dropping records, and the stories that inspire us all.” The timing couldn’t be better—Roku’s 2023-2024 data shows women’s sports viewership surging, and the NWSL, with clubs like Gotham FC and Portland Thorns FC, is riding that wave.
The NWSL is just as pumped about the partnership. “Teaming up with Roku’s massive platform and slick sports setup is a game-changer for getting our matches to more fans,” said Julie Haddon, the league’s Chief Marketing and Commercial Officer. “This makes it super easy for our growing crowd to jump into the action.” With 15 teams—including newcomers like BOS Nation FC and Denver NWSL—the league’s reach is expanding, and Roku’s aiming to bring every goal and save to living rooms nationwide.
So, what’s in the NWSL Zone? Fans can track down live games—some free, some for purchase—alongside short clips, highlight reels, and full re-airs. Schedules and airtimes are front and center, so no one misses a kick. Games will pop up across Roku’s sports hubs, like the Sports Zone, Soccer Zone, and Women’s Sports Zone, streamed via partners like CBS Sports, ESPN, Prime Video, and ION. Free viewing’s on the table too, thanks to ION’s channel and NWSL+, while Paramount+ offers another option through The Roku Channel.
This isn’t Roku’s first swing at women’s sports. The company’s been on a roll lately, partnering with female-led studios for projects like the talk series Women’s Sports Now and the WNBA doc A Radical Act: Renee Montgomery. The NWSL Zone builds on that vibe, tapping into a cultural shift where women’s sports are grabbing bigger audiences—and ad dollars. A December 2024 MRI-Simmons report pegged these fans as a goldmine for brands, and Roku’s clearly banking on it.
For Sling TV Freestream or smaller cable networks watching from the sidelines, Roku’s move might raise eyebrows. As ad budgets tighten—SiriusXM’s CFO just flagged a dip tied to tariff worries—free, high-value content like this could steal eyeballs. Based in San Jose, California, Roku’s been a streaming trailblazer since day one, and with the NWSL Zone, it’s doubling down on connecting fans to what they love. Soccer season’s about to heat up, and Roku’s got the front-row seats ready.
