President Donald Trump unleashed a fiery salvo against Comcast and its CEO, Brian Roberts, late Sunday night, accusing the media giant of operating MSNBC as an “illegal arm of the Democrat Party” that should “pay vast sums of money” for unspecified damages to the nation. The outburst, posted on Truth Social platform, came hours after news broke of a major shakeup at MSNBC, including the cancellation of Joy Reid’s primetime show, The ReidOut. Trump’s comments, which named Roberts twice, framed the network’s programming shifts as evidence of broader corruption—a charge that’s reigniting debates over his influence on media and his administration’s regulatory stance.
The tirade appeared triggered by MSNBC’s decision to drop Reid, a vocal Trump critic, from its 7 p.m. ET slot as part of a sweeping overhaul led by new president Rebecca Kutler. “Lowlife Chairman of ‘Concast,’ Brian Roberts, the owner of Ratings Challenged NBC and MSDNC, has finally gotten the nerve up to fire one of the least talented people in television,” Trump wrote, mocking Reid’s ratings and calling her a “mentally obnoxious racist.” He went on to claim, “This whole corrupt operation is nothing more than an illegal arm of the Democrat Party. They should be forced to pay vast sums of money for the damage they’ve done to our Country.” The post also took swipes at other MSNBC personalities like Rachel Maddow and Al Sharpton, but reserved special scorn for Roberts, whom Trump dubbed a “lowlife” overseeing a failing empire.
MSNBC’s lineup changes, set to be announced this week, will see Reid’s hour replaced by a panel show featuring The Weekend co-hosts Symone Sanders, Michael Steele, and Alicia Menendez—a trio poised to bring diverse perspectives to the slot. Kutler, who assumed leadership earlier this month, is steering the network toward a refreshed identity as Comcast prepares to spin off its cable channels, including MSNBC, into a standalone entity later this year.
Trump’s attack on Comcast and Roberts isn’t new—he’s long disparaged the company as “Concast” and threatened retaliation over its coverage. But the timing, paired with his administration’s early moves, amplifies the stakes. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr, a Trump appointee, has already launched probes into broadcaster bias, including CBS, and signaled interest in Big Tech’s practices—raising questions about whether Comcast could face regulatory heat. Yet FCC Chairman Brendan Carr has promised fair investigation of CBS.
For now, Comcast has stayed mum, and MSNBC’s focus remains on its reboot. But with Trump naming Brian Roberts twice in his crosshairs, the clash hints at a brewing storm as his administration flexes its muscle over a media landscape he’s never shied from battling.
