Charter Communications, the parent company of Spectrum, is making a significant investment in expanding its broadband network to rural areas across the United States. The multi-year initiative, driven by over $7 billion in private investment, will add more than 100,000 miles of new fiber-optic network infrastructure and bring high-speed internet access to over 1.7 million new locations.
This expansion project is a major step towards bridging the digital divide and ensuring that more Americans have access to reliable and affordable internet service. Rural communities have historically been underserved when it comes to broadband access, limiting their opportunities for education, economic development, and healthcare. Spectrum’s investment will bring symmetrical multi-gigabit speeds to these underserved areas, enabling residents to participate in the digital economy fully.
The expansion project is already underway, with crews working to deploy fiber-optic cables in rural communities across the country. Charter Communications is committed to working with local communities and government agencies to ensure that the expansion project is completed efficiently and effectively.
This comes as Spectrum just announced it expanded in Clare County, Michigan, adding 70 new homes and small businesses to its gig network. It also just announced expansion of its service in Catawba County, North Carolina adding 300 home and small businesses.
“Spectrum is bringing gigabit broadband to unserved communities in Michigan and across America,” said Christopher Spray, Area Vice President, Field Operations, Michigan. “Our investment is making it possible to deliver the high-value broadband, mobile, TV and voice services to portions of Clare County. We are providing residents and small businesses superior connectivity at highly competitive prices, backed by a team of skilled local technicians and 100% U.S.-based customer service.”
The company’s investment in rural broadband expansion has been praised by policymakers and community leaders. They recognize the importance of high-speed internet access for economic development, education, and healthcare in rural areas. Spectrum’s initiative is expected to have a significant positive impact on these communities, providing residents with the tools they need to succeed in the 21st century.
This also comes as Spectrum is looking for ways to expand its customer base, as the company has seen both TV and internet customers decline in recent quarters.
