Charter Communications, operating under the brand name Spectrum, is set to close its Akron, Ohio call center this spring, resulting in the layoff of more than 250 employees. This announcement comes on the heels of significant customer service layoffs in 2024, raising concerns about the company’s employment practices and commitment to local communities.

This comes as Spectrum laid off over 1,000 employees in 2024 mostly in the customer service world.

According to a WARN notice filed with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, Spectrum’s residential inbound sales call center located at 530 S. Main St. in Akron will cease operations on March 28, 2025. The closure is expected to be permanent, affecting 259 employees, including 229 sales representatives.

A Charter Communications spokesperson confirmed the closure, stating that the work will be transferred to other U.S.-based call centers. Employees have the option to transfer to another inbound sales center or apply for other roles within the company. Relocation benefits will be offered to those who choose to transfer.

“Any employee who does not have a new position by the time the center closes will be eligible for comprehensive severance benefits,” the spokesperson added to WJW.

These repeated layoffs raise questions about Spectrum’s commitment to its workforce and the communities it serves. While the company emphasizes relocation and severance options, the loss of jobs and the potential disruption to employees’ lives are significant concerns.

The closure of the Akron call center is a reminder of the challenges faced by workers in today’s economy. As companies seek to streamline operations and adapt to changing market conditions, employees often bear the brunt of these changes.

The impact of these layoffs on the Akron community and the future of Spectrum’s workforce remain to be seen. As the company continues to expand its reach, it is crucial for it to balance its growth strategies with a commitment to its employees and the communities it serves.
