CNN will reportedly undergoing a significant programming overhaul under the leadership of new network chief Mark Thompson. Among the most notable changes is a shift for veteran anchor Wolf Blitzer, who will be moving from his long-held evening slot to co-host a new morning show alongside Pamela Brown.

Blitzer, 76, has been a fixture at CNN for decades, most recently anchoring “The Situation Room” at 6 p.m. The new morning show, which will reportedly expand Blitzer’s screen time by an hour each day, marks a significant shift for the network and its veteran anchor, according to a report from the New York Post.

This shakeup comes as CNN seeks to revitalize its programming and boost ratings, which have declined in recent years. Thompson, the former head of the BBC and The New York Times, was brought in by Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav to lead the network’s turnaround efforts.

Potential Lineup Changes

The reshuffling of CNN’s anchor lineup could also include changes for other prominent figures. Jim Acosta, currently the anchor of “CNN Newsroom” at 10 a.m., may see his show canceled, while pre-dawn anchor Kasie Hunt could be moved to a more high-profile afternoon slot.

According to reports, CNN is considering various scenarios to accommodate the new Blitzer-Brown morning show, including reducing the length of “CNN News Central” or splitting the early morning hours between business correspondent Rahel Solomon and former NPR host Audie Cornish.

Expanding Erin Burnett’s nightly show is also reportedly under consideration.

A New Generation of Talent

The programming changes are reportedly part of Thompson’s broader strategy to usher in a new generation of on-air talent and refresh the network’s image. While CNN has not officially commented on the reported changes, the network’s declining ratings suggest a need for a new approach.

As CNN navigates this period of transition, viewers can expect to see a significant shift in its programming lineup. Whether these changes will successfully attract a larger audience and revitalize the network remains to be seen, but the shakeup signals a clear effort by CNN to adapt and evolve in the ever-competitive cable news landscape.

Correction: we updated the story to clearly note that CNN has not officially announced the changed as of the time of this post.
