AT&T & Verizon Confirm Security Breach, But Assure Customers That The Networks Are Now Secure

Telecommunications giants AT&T and Verizon have publicly acknowledged that they were targeted by the China-linked Salt Typhoon hacking operation, confirming earlier reports. Both companies, however, assured customers that their networks are now clear of the intrusion and that they are actively cooperating with authorities, according to a Bloomberg report.

In separate statements released over the weekend, AT&T and Verizon provided details about the breach and the steps taken to mitigate the threat. AT&T stated that the hackers, allegedly linked to the People’s Republic of China, sought to gain information about individuals of foreign intelligence interest. Verizon revealed that the attack targeted “a small number of high-profile customers in government and politics.”  

Containment and Cooperation:

Both companies emphasized that they have successfully contained the threat and are working closely with law enforcement agencies.  

AT&T echoed this sentiment, stating, “We detect no activity by nation-state actors in our networks at this time.” They further emphasized their commitment to notifying affected individuals and cooperating with law enforcement.  

The Scope of Salt Typhoon:

The Wall Street Journal initially reported the Salt Typhoon intrusions in October, revealing that the hackers potentially accessed systems used by the federal government for court-authorized wiretapping requests. This raised significant concerns about the potential compromise of sensitive information and national security.  

The White House confirmed on Friday that nine telecom companies were breached in the operation, though it did not disclose the names of the affected companies. US officials acknowledged the difficulty in determining the full extent of the damage and identifying all those targeted.  

Ongoing Concerns and Response:

While AT&T and Verizon assure their networks are now secure, the Salt Typhoon incident highlights the growing threat of state-sponsored cyberattacks and the vulnerability of critical infrastructure. The Biden administration recently convened a closed-door meeting with telecom industry leaders, including AT&T CEO John Stankey, to discuss strategies for addressing these vulnerabilities and strengthening cybersecurity defenses.  

The incident also underscores the importance of transparency and proactive communication from companies facing cyberattacks. By acknowledging the breach and outlining their response, AT&T and Verizon aim to reassure customers and maintain trust in their services.
