The US government is investigating TP-Link, a Chinese company that dominates the American home router market, over potential national security risks. Authorities are concerned about the company’s alleged failure to address security flaws in its routers, which have been linked to cyberattacks by Chinese hacking groups.

TP-Link, which holds a 65% market share in the US, provides routers to millions of homes, businesses, and even government agencies, including the Defense Department. Investigators from the Commerce, Defense, and Justice Departments are probing the company, with the possibility of banning the sale of TP-Link routers in the US as early as next year, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal.

Concerns stem from a recent Microsoft report that revealed Chinese hackers were exploiting vulnerabilities in TP-Link routers to conduct cyberattacks against Western targets, including government organizations and defense contractors. Sources say the company often ships routers with security flaws and fails to engage with security researchers who identify these vulnerabilities.

“TP-Link routers are routinely shipped to customers with security flaws, which the company often fails to address,” said a source familiar with the matter. “While routers often have bugs, regardless of their manufacturer, TP-Link doesn’t engage with security researchers concerned about them.”

A TP-Link spokeswoman denied these claims, stating the company takes security seriously and addresses known vulnerabilities. “We welcome any opportunities to engage with the U.S. government to demonstrate that our security practices are fully in line with industry security standards,” she said.

The Chinese Embassy in Washington accused the US of using national security as a pretext to “suppress Chinese companies” and vowed to defend the rights of Chinese firms.

This investigation comes amidst heightened tensions between the US and China and follows a pattern of US action against Chinese tech companies, including Huawei. If a ban is implemented, it would be the largest removal of Chinese telecom equipment from the US since the Trump administration’s action against Huawei in 2019.

The Justice Department is also investigating TP-Link for potential violations of antitrust laws, looking into whether the company’s significantly lower prices compared to competitors constitute an attempt to monopolize the market. TP-Link denies these allegations, stating they are committed to complying with US laws.

The Biden administration is exploring this action as part of a broader response to recent cyberattacks linked to China. In addition to potentially banning TP-Link routers, the administration is also moving to remove China Telecom’s US subsidiary from US telecom infrastructure.

This investigation highlights the growing concerns over cybersecurity and the vulnerabilities posed by foreign-made technology. Experts emphasize the need for stronger supply chain security and increased vigilance against cyber threats.

A potential ban on TP-Link routers would significantly disrupt the US router market and could lead to increased prices for consumers. The company’s rapid growth in recent years, fueled by the pandemic and its low prices, has made it a dominant player in the industry.

The investigation is ongoing, and the final decision on whether to ban TP-Link routers will likely be made in the coming months.
