Today, Amazon announced three new accessibility updates designed to make Fire TV and other Amazon products more inclusive for people with disabilities. These updates focus on improving the streaming experience for people with hearing aids, making quick start guides more accessible for visually impaired users, and expanding accessibility features across Amazon devices.
Dual Audio on Fire TV Omni Mini-LED Series: Fire TV is getting a major upgrade for users with hearing aids. The new Dual Audio feature on the Fire TV Omni Mini-LED Series allows people with ASHA-enabled hearing aids to enjoy TV shows and movies alongside friends and family. This means users can stream high-quality audio directly to their hearing aids while others listen through the TV’s speakers. Dual Audio will be available through a free software update in the coming weeks.
Fire TV Expands ASHA Support Globally: Fire TV is expanding its compatibility with hearing aids from leading manufacturer WS Audiology (WSA). This means customers with Widex Moment Behind-The-Ear (BTE) and Receiver-In-Canal (RIC) hearing aids can now stream sound directly from their Fire TV devices. WSA joins Amazon’s existing collaborations with Starkey and Cochlear, providing more accessible entertainment options for people with hearing loss.
QR Codes with Raised Dots Aid Visually Impaired Users: Amazon is making device setup easier for blind and visually impaired customers with new tactile-marked QR codes. These codes feature raised UV dots for easy discovery and are located on select device packaging. Scanning the QR code with a smartphone directs users to an enhanced digital Quick Start Guide with localized information, troubleshooting tips, video guides with captions, and accessibility features instructions.
“We’re committed to making our products and features accessible to everyone,” said [an Amazon spokesperson]. “These new updates are a positive step forward in creating a more inclusive streaming and home entertainment experience for all.”
