Fans of the beloved medical comedy “Scrubs” can finally rejoice! The long-rumored reboot is officially in development at ABC, with series creator Bill Lawrence at the helm.

After weeks of negotiations to secure Lawrence’s involvement, a deal has been struck with Warner Bros. TV, where Lawrence is currently under an overall deal. This allows him to develop the “Scrubs” reboot for Disney’s 20th Television and ABC, though he won’t be serving as the day-to-day showrunner.

Original Cast Members Expected to Return

With Lawrence on board, 20th Television is now working to secure the participation of the original main cast, including Zach Braff (J.D.), Sarah Chalke (Elliot), Donald Faison (Turk), and John C. McGinley (Dr. Cox).

There are even early plans to incorporate Judy Reyes’ character, Carla Espinosa, though her involvement remains uncertain due to her commitment to ABC’s new drama series “High Potential.”

A Hybrid Approach

Lawrence envisions the new “Scrubs” as a hybrid between a revival and a reboot. It will revisit the original characters years later while also introducing a new generation of medical interns. This approach aims to satisfy longtime fans while also attracting new viewers.

“We’ve been talking about a lot, and I think the only real reason to do it is a combo,” Lawrence told Deadline in October. “A: people wanting to see what the world of medicine was like for the people they love, which is part of any successful reboot. But B: I think that show always worked because you get to see young people dropped into the world of medicine… So I think that, no matter what it is, it would be a giant mistake not to do as a combo of those two things.”

A New Chapter for “Scrubs”

Originally airing on NBC for seven seasons and then on ABC for two more, “Scrubs” captured the hearts of viewers with its unique blend of humor and heart. The series followed the personal and professional lives of medical interns and staff at Sacred Heart Hospital.

While the reboot is still in the early stages of development, the involvement of Bill Lawrence and the potential return of the original cast has generated significant excitement among fans. A new generation of viewers may soon get to experience the laughter, tears, and heartwarming moments that made “Scrubs” a beloved classic.
